In a first, U.S. lawmakers take a step against India on Kashmir

  • United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has added an appeal to end what it calls a “humanitarian crisis” in Kashmir in its report ahead of the annual Foreign Appropriations Act for 2020.

  • According to the report, the committeeon Appropriations “noteswith concern the current humanitarian crisis in Kashmirand calls on the Governmentof India to: fully restore telecommunications and Internet services; lift its lockdownand curfew; and release individuals detained pursuant tothe Government's revocationof Article 370 of the Indianconstitution.”
  • Senator Chris Van Hollenvisited Delhi this week as a part of delegation thatdiscussed the Kashmirsituation.
  • Van Hollen had metwith External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Washington last week and SenatorBob Menendez, also a part ofthe delegation, met withCommerce and IndustriesMinister PiyushGoyal thisweek in Delhi.
  • Both Senatorshave made public statements in the last two months on theKashmir situation
