SC bench will hear Aarey forest case

Why in news?
  • SC will hear a plea against felling of 2,646 trees at the Aarey colony by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited(MMRCL) to make way for a Metro car shed.

  • The apex court has decided to pursue the case as a PIL and constituted a special bench.
  • The MMRCL had started axing the trees after the Bombay High Court had rejected a bunch of petitions by NGO’s and activists.
  • Following the protest the Mumbai Police have imposed Section 144 in the area and arrested 29 green activists who were granted bail on by a holiday court on sunday.
(1) As per the arrested, the felling of trees in the prime green area of the city will lead to irrevocable losses.
