
Brus back in Mizoram demand package parity
Why in news?
- A resettlement package for the displaced Bru tribal people remaining in Tripura, which was agreed upon on January 16, has triggered resentment among those who had accepted rehabilitation packages and returned to Mizoram earlier.

- Discriminatory Rehabilitation Package:
(1) In 1997, over 40,000 Brus fled ethnic violence in Mizoram and took shelter in the Kanchanpur sub-division of the adjoining State of Tripura.
(2) Some of them had returned after accepting rehabilitation packages in the nine phases of repatriation till 2018.
(3) They now feel discriminated against as the latest agreement allows those who refused to vacate the relief camps to settle down permanently in Tripura.
- Current Repatriation Agreement:
(1) The quadripartite agreement signed by the Centre, the governments of Tripura and Mizoram and various Bru refugee organisations entail a housing plot in Tripura for each displaced family, in addition to ₹4 lakh in fixed deposit, Rs. 5,000 a month for two years, free rations for two years and Rs. 1.5 lakh to build a house.
(2) Each of the 6,000 repatriated Brus received ₹80,000 on their return to Mizoram and were entitled to free rations for a year.
