IAF positions BrahMos-armed SU-30MKIs at Thanjavur

Why is it in news?
  • The Indian Air Force inducted a squadron of Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter planes, with the capability to carry BrahMos missiles, at its Thanjavur airbase on Monday.

  • Fleet at Thanjavur: Five to six SU-30MKI fighter planes with the capability to carry BrahMos Air Launched Cruise Missile would be positioned at the Air Force Station, Thanjavur.
  • Significance of the development: The IAF would get more air power to strike from long stand-off ranges on any target at sea or on land with accuracy by day or night and in all weather conditions.
  • Sukhoi-30 MKI
(1) The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a twinjet multirole air superiority fighter developed by Russia's Sukhoi.
(2) It is built under licence by India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
(3) IAF currently has around 260 Sukhoi-30 MKIs.
