Why is it in news?
  • India and OECD sign agreement to enable India’s participation in Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA) to be held in 2021.
OECD
  • The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is an intergovernmental economic organisation.
  • Founded in 1961.
  • Member countries:
    (1) 36 countries.
    (2) Most OECD members are high-income economies with a very high Human Development Index (HDI) and are regarded as developed countries.
  • Mission: To promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world.
  • Headquarter: Paris, France.
  • Forum of countries: It is a forum of countries describing themselves as committed to democracy and the market economy, providing a platform to compare policy experiences, seeking answers to common problems, identify good practices and coordinate domestic and international policies of its members.
PISA
  • India’s participation in PISA:
    (1) Participation in PISA will improve learning levels of children and enhance quality of education in the country.
    (2) India boycotted PISA in 2012 and 2015 on account of its dismal performance in 2009 (72nd rank out of 74).
    (3) Schools run by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) and schools in the UT of Chandigarh will participate.
    (4) PISA covers sample of 15-year-old students representing all forms of schooling i.e. public, private, private aided etc.
    (5) The CBSE and NCERT will be part of the process and activities leading to the actual test.
  • What subject areas are assessed in PISA?
    (1) PISA measures student performance in mathematics, reading, and science literacy.
    (2) It is conducted every 3 years.
    (3) Each PISA data cycle assesses one of the three core subject areas in depth (considered the major or focal subject), although all three core subjects are assessed in each cycle (the other two subjects are considered minor domains for that assessment year).
