
DIPP renamed
Why is it in the news ?
- The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has been renamed as the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
- It has also enhanced its role with a mandate to deal with matters related to start-ups, facilitating ease of doing business among others.
More in the news
- The notification included four new categories of responsibilities the renamed body will be in charge of. They are as follows:
- The promotion of internal trade (including retail trade).
- The welfare of traders and their employees.
- Matters relating to facilitating Ease of Doing Business.
- Matters relating to start-ups.
The previous responsibilities of the erstwhile DIPP were:
- Relating to general industrial policy.
- Administration of the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act, 1951.
- Industrial management.
- Productivity in industry.
- Matters related to e-commerce.
Background :
- The DIPP was established in 1995 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as a nodal agency for design and facilitation of industrial, trade and commerce policies.
- It was reconstituted in 2000 with the merger of the Department of Industrial Development.
- The Department is performing vital functions related to policy design in several fields including industrial policy, intellectual property, FDI policy etc.(Now additional responsibilities have been added as mentioned above)
