EC curbs campaigning by Yogi, Mayawati, Maneka and Azam

Why in news?
  • After the Supreme Court decided to examine the Election Commission’s powers to curb hate speech, poll panel slapped a 72-hour prohibition on campaigning on UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan.
  • A 48-hour campaign ban was also imposed on Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, and BSP chief Mayawati.

  • EC’s explanation for ban on campaign:
    (1) At a political rally on April 9, Mr. Adityanath had said if the Congress, the SP and the BSP had faith in “Ali”, “then we also have faith in Bajrangbali”.
    (2) Mr. Khan had said, “You got represented (by her) for 10 years. People of Rampur, it took you 17 years to understand her reality. But I could recognize it in 17 days that she wears a khaki underwear.”
    (3) Khaki is a colour associated with the RSS. Ms. Jayaprada had won Lok Sabha elections from Rampur in 2009 and 2014 on an SP ticket. However, this year she has switched parties and is contesting on a BJP ticket.
    (4) Hence EC imposed a nationwide campaigning ban on both the leaders for 72 hours.
