Why in news
- A debate on poll reforms was held in Rajya Sabha with opposition accusing the Govt of misusing social media, EVM's and electoral bonds.
Oppositions Concerns
- Misuse of social media platforms such as Google, Facebook and others
- The member alleged incumbent Govt to be the top spender on Google for advertisements during the elections.
- Both the BJP and the Prime Minister enjoyed complete media hegemony.
- About EVM's
- Objection to voting machines as counting machines.
- The source code, the programme loaded on EVM's are unknown.
- The ballot paper (in an electronic form) which is loaded in the EVM units two-three days before the elections by an engineer and not Election Commission.
Govts View
- Law Minister accused the Opposition of adopting double standards on the issue of EVM, saying leaders from their parties had become Chief Ministers and Prime Ministers through the same voting process.
- The minister also pitched for the idea of “one nation, one poll”, and urged the Opposition to consider the proposal with an open mind.
- The Minister said the government would write to the Election Commission to have a single voter list for Lok Sabha, Assembly and panchayat elections in the country.
