Why in news
- The Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019 has been passed by the Lok Sabha.
- The Bill will replaces an Ordinance promulgated earlier in March

Provisions of the Bill
- The Amendments are in compliance with the Supreme Court order.
- A penalty of INR 1 crore and a jail term to private entities for storing Aadhaar data.
- It also makes the use of Aadhaar voluntary for opening a bank account, securing a mobile phone connection, or receiving treatment in hospital.
- The benefits of the scheme will not be denied to someone who does not have Aadhaar.
About data protection
- Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology assured the House that the government is also working on a data protection Bill, which will be brought at a later date.
- The minister has also stated that necessary safeguards have been taken for prohibition of data theft.
