
Trump: Kashmir situation complicated by religion
Why is it in news?
- U.S. President Donald Trump said he would do his best to mediate or help somehow with the tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.

- Mediation attempt:(1) Mr. Trump drew attention to the fact that he had spoken to the Prime Ministers of both countries and that he would be meeting Prime Minister Modi in Biarritz, France, for the G7 summit over the weekend.(2) He stopped short of directly saying that he would discuss the Kashmir issue with Mr. Modi over the weekend.
He said that he will do the best he can to mediate or do something.
- Religion and Kashmir: While referring to Kashmir, president Trump said that it lot has to do with religion. Religion is a complicated subject. The segment of his comments on Kashmir also included his version of a history of the region.
- US concerns:(1) The U.S. has been concerned about the risk of a nuclear confrontation between India and Pakistan- concerns that have especially been stressed since the terror attack in Pulwama and the ensuing hostilities between the two countries.(2) The U.S. also seeks Pakistan’s cooperation in ensuring that a peace deal is struck with the Taliban and the U.S. can begin withdrawing from Afghanistan.
- Indian response: India has made no comment on Mr. Trump’s remarks, which included another offer of mediation between New Delhi and Islamabad, despite the government repeatedly rejecting any third party role.
- G-7 summit meet: The Afghan peace process, the scenario in Kashmir and tensions between India and Pakistan are expected to be discussed when Mr. Trump interacts with Mr. Modi on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Biarritz, France.
