
India should be wary of a U.S.-Pakistan deal: former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai
Why is it in news?
- Mr. Karzai in his visit to Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, said he had conveyed the “fears for Afghanistan” if there was a deal that involved Pakistan.

- U.S.-Pakistan “deal” on Afghanistan:(1) He said that India should be wary about a possible U.S.-Pakistan “deal” on Afghanistan as U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad was set to begin another round of talks in Doha to try and reach a deal with the Taliban.(2) He differentiated categorically between peace in Afghanistan and U.S.-Pakistani deals in Afghanistan.
How India should proceed on Taliban talks?
- Understanding practical situation:(1) All stakeholders in Peace talk acknowledged that it is impossible to have peace in Afghanistan without Taliban on board.(2) India should also need to acknowledge this as early as possible to avoid complete isolation or exclusion from peace talks and to secure its national interests.
- Maintaining effective diplomatic channel: India should maintain effective intelligence and diplomatic channel with Afghanistan to stay aware of all ground realities and agreements to secure its investment, citizen and interests in Afghanistan.
- Persuading USA:(1) From Iranian revolution onwards, USA and Iran are against each other.(2) India, having good relations with both, can play a mediating role by persuading USA to bring Iran on board for Peace process talks so to have early, effective conclusion to Afghan Taliban issue.
