
School Education Quality Index
Why is it in the news?
- According to a report released by the Niti Aayog, Kerala has emerged on top among 20 large states in terms of quality of school education.
- The report, titled 'The Success of Our Schools-School Education Quality Index' (SEQI) and jointly released by the Niti Aayog, HRD Ministry and the World Bank.

- School Education Quality Index' (SEQI) used 2016-17 as the reference year and 2015-16 as the base year.
- It was developed to evaluate the performance of states and Union Territories (UTs) in the school education sector.
- Key Findings of the report:
- Parameters:(1) The index, prepared on the basis of 30 indicators, was divided into two broad categories:(2) Outcomes that consisted of learning, access, infrastructure & facilities, and equity outcomes.(3) Governance processes aiding outcomes.(4) Tamil Nadu was the top performer in access and equity outcomes, while Karnataka led in learning outcomes.(5) On governance processes aiding outcomes, Haryana, Assam and Odisha occupied the top spots.
- Performance Variance:(1) Among large states, the performance varied from 76.6% for Kerala to 36.4% for Uttar Pradesh.(2) Among the small states, the overall performance varied from 68.8% for Manipur to 24.6% for Arunachal Pradesh.(3) In UTs, the overall performance scored from 82.9% for Chandigarh to 31.9% for Lakshadweep.
