
SC issues notice to poll panel on ‘discrepancies’
Why in news?
- SC has asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to respond to a petition filed by two NGOs seeking a probe into alleged discrepancies between voter turnout and the number of votes counted in 347 constituencies in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

- Petition asked the court to direct the ECI “to conduct actual and accurate reconciliation of data before the declaration of the final result of any election”.
- Petition mentioned:
(1) Lack of reasoned explanation by ECI: Mismatch & clean-up of certain data from its website causing serious doubts in the minds of citizens about the entire process of counting & result declaration.
(2) Discrepancy Pattern:
(a) A Study was done on the discrepancy patterns found in the ECI website and the ‘My Voters Turnout App’.
(b) Discrepancies ranged from 1 vote (lowest) to 1,01,323 votes.
(3) Number trouble: There were 6 seats where the discrepancy in votes was higher than the winning margin. The total volume of discrepancies was in the nature of 7,39,104 votes put together.
