Accessible India campaign

Why is it in the news ?
  • The deadline for the government’s Accessible India campaign that aims at making public spaces friendly for persons with disabilities has been extended due to “slow progress”.
  • Revised deadlines have been extended to March 2020.
About the Accessible India campaign
  • It an initiative of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
  • It is a nation-wide flagship campaign for achieving universal accessibility to persons with disabilities(PwDs).
  • Purpose: To provide equal opportunity and make them live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life in an inclusive society.
  • Targets/Components:
(1) Enhancing the accessibility of built environment.
(2) Information & communication eco-System accessibility.
(3) Accessibility to transport system.
Significance of the campaign
  • Access:
(1) The government buildings will be made fully accessible for persons with disabilities.
(2) All the international airports in the country and railway stations will be made fully accessible.
(3) Government owned public transport will be converted into fully accessible carriers.
  • National Standards:
(1)  There will be standards on captioning and sign-language interpretation in consultation with National media authorities.
