U.K. raised concerns over BJP affiliate’s support to Conservatives

Why is it in news?
  • The British government had sent a message to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to express its concerns that the party was taking a partisan stand on the election.

  • British diplomat met MEA and BJP office bearers: A senior British diplomat met the BJP’s Foreign Cell Head in Delhi to express the concerns, after interviews given by BJP-affiliated OF-BJP (Overseas Friends of BJP) leaders, including president Kuldip Singh Shekhawat, that indicated that the Indian ruling party would prefer a Conservative party win.
  • MEA stand on the issue:
(1) The MEA declined to make an official comment, but sources said the government’s position had been conveyed to the U.K. government on the matter.
(2) “Election is an internal matter of UK. People who voted in the elections are all UK nationals.
(3) We do not wish to get involved as to which section of their population is supporting whom.”
