Why in news
- The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) will seek approval of Union Cabinet on National Mission for Natural Language Translation.
More in news
- It is one amongst the key missions identified by the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC).
- MeitY is the lead implementing agency along with Ministry of Human Resource Development and Department of Science and Technology and PM- STIAC as an overarching body.
- With a proposal of INR 450 crores over a period of three years, the mission is a part of 100 day action plan chartered out by the ministry.
About the Mission
- The major objective that is to be achieved through the mission is to overcome the language barrier by creating an ecosystem involving Central and State agencies and start-ups.
- It aims to make science and technology accessible to all by facilitating access to teaching and researching material bilingually i.e. in English and in one’s native Indian language.
- For translation purposes the government plans a combination of machine translation and human translation.
- Translation activities can also help generate employment for educated unemployed.
