Why is it in news?
- The Supreme Court requested the search committee on Lokpal to recommend by the end of February a panel of names for appointing the country’s first anti-graft ombudsman.
Appointment of Lokpal
- According to the Lokpal Act, the chairperson and members shall be appointed by the President.
- It is on the basis of recommendations of the selection committee comprising:
1) Prime Minister,
2) Speaker of the Lok Sabha,
3) Leader of Opposition in the House,
- Chief Justice of India
- An eminent jurist.
