Why is it in the news ?

  • The Union cabinet approved creation of national bench of Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal.
  • The National Bench of the Appellate Tribunal to be situated in New Delhi.
  • It would be a quasi-judicial body that will mediate in indirect tax disputes between states and centre. 

More about the Tribunal

    • The dispute resolution forum would be crucial in the coming months as several states may end up fighting among themselves and with central government over indirect tax revenues.
Functions :
    • The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) would serve as the forum of second appeals to do with the applicability of GST.
    • It will also be the first common forum of dispute resolution between the Centre and the States.
    • The CGST Act provides for an appeal and review mechanism for dispute resolution under the GST regime.
    • Centre to constitute, on the recommendation of the GST Council, an appellate tribunal for hearing appeals against the orders passed by the Appellate Authority.
Composition :
    • The tribunal will be presided over by its president.
    • It will consist of a technical member from the Centre and a representative of the States.
