  • Butterfly from 76 species 10 years ago have increased to 182 species,as per a four day survey done by environmental groups and forest departments.

  • About 20 species in the category of migratory butterflies were noticed in the survey.
  • As many as 132 bird species were also recorded.
  • The kerala’s state bird Great hornbill had widespread presence hinting at an undisturbed habitat, as per the survey.
  • The availability of water in the Idukki reservoir and easy preying might be a reason for its vast presence.
  • Survey, however did not mention about hte seasonal and migratory birds in the sanctuary.
  • The pattern of migration of butterflies too was not emphasised.

(1) Idukki is known for large presence of feral cattle and a study on how they impact the food availability of other species has not been conducted.
