  • 300 scientists from across the world, including one Indian, will aboard research vessel Polarstern for “Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition.

  • Aim of the expedition will be to parameterise the atmospheric , geophysical, oceanographic and all other possible variables in the Arctic, and use it to more accurately forecast the changes in our weather systems.
  • It will help researchers better understand the impact of climate change and aid in improved weather projections.
  • The research vessel anchored on a large ice sheet in the Central Arctic, will drift along during the pitchblack Polar winter.a suitable ice sheet was identified before anchoring.
  • It will be the first to conduct a study of this scale at the North Pole fro an entire year. Previous studies have been of shorter periods as thicker ice sheets prevent access in winter
