Civil Services: A Constructive Means of Social Intervention

Civil services have remained one of the preferred career paths for many students despite the transformation in the role of public services and the emergence of other career options since the adoption of LPG in 1991. The security of the job, social recognition, the service profile, and the opportunity to serve our nation are the prominent factors that drive a substantial pool of youngsters towards civil services. Given the prevalence of societal inequality, complex poverty, unemployment, and imbalanced and exclusionary economic growth, the civil services are still perceived as offering a constructive means of social intervention.

The Constitutional Mandate

The Union Public Service Commission

Our Constitution makers, anticipating the critical role of civil services in the upcoming project of an inclusive, secular and democratic nation as well as state building, provided for a constitutional body for the purpose of recruiting public servants in India. This body, known as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is tasked with conducting various examinations. The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is the gateway through which candidates are selected for the country’s premier civil services.
