Mismatch between VVPAT and EVM

Election Commission has set up a team to look into the case of mismatch between the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips and the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) for the recently concluded general elections.

  • Of the 1.25 crore VVPAT slips counted, 51 or 0.0004% have a mismatch.
  • It is for the first time since 2017 when VVPAT were introduced that such a discrepancy has occurred.
  • Under the electoral rules, if there is any discrepancy in the match, the VVPAT count prevails.

About VVPAT

  • Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail is a machine to verify that the vote polled by the voter goes to the correct candidate.
  • VVPAT generates a slip showing the details of the candidate to whom the voter has voted.
  • VVPAT slip is shown to the voter for 7 seconds after which it drops in an under cabinet
  • Counting of the slip is monitored by the returning officer.
  • It is second line of verification useful in time when allegation around Electronic Voting Machines crop up.
